After the Crowds Leave

An Offseason Weekend in Zion & Grafton Ghost Town

Listen to Episode #107

Zion National Park is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the Southwest, but experiencing it after the busiest crowds have left can feel like visiting a completely different place.

In Episode #107 of the Anderson Overland Podcast, we're heading to Southern Utah for an offseason weekend exploring Zion National Park and Grafton Ghost Town.

This trip combines national park scenery, Southwest history, a ghost town, road-trip adventure, and the quieter side of one of America's most recognizable outdoor destinations.

Visiting Zion National Park in the Offseason

Zion is famous for towering sandstone cliffs, narrow canyons, incredible hiking, and dramatic desert landscapes.

It's also known for attracting large numbers of visitors during popular travel periods.

Visiting during the offseason can provide a different experience. Cooler temperatures and seasonal changes can completely change the atmosphere of the park and surrounding communities.

Current weather, trail conditions, road closures, shuttle operations, and park regulations should always be checked before visiting, especially during the cooler months.

Exploring Southern Utah Beyond Zion

Zion may be the centerpiece of a trip to this part of Utah, but the surrounding region has plenty of places worth exploring.

Historic towns, scenic highways, desert roads, overlooks, hiking areas, and remnants of the region's past make Southern Utah an excellent destination for a road trip.

Sometimes the most memorable part of a trip isn't the major attraction. It's the unexpected place you find nearby.

Exploring Grafton Ghost Town Near Zion

Grafton Ghost Town adds an entirely different experience to a Zion-area adventure.

Instead of towering canyon walls and busy national park viewpoints, Grafton offers a glimpse into Southern Utah's past through preserved historic structures and the surrounding landscape.

Combining places like Grafton with a visit to Zion makes a road trip more than just a national park stop. It becomes an opportunity to explore the history and character of the entire region.

A Southern Utah Weekend Road Trip

You don't always need a week or two to have a memorable adventure.

A weekend road trip can be enough time to explore a national park, visit a historic location, find a great meal, drive some scenic roads, and discover somewhere you've never been before.

Trips like this are also a great reminder that adventure doesn't have to involve the most difficult trail or the most remote campsite. Sometimes it's simply about getting in the vehicle and going somewhere new.

Why We Like Offseason Adventure Travel

Traveling outside the busiest season can completely change the experience of a destination.

The weather may require additional preparation and some activities may operate differently, but the tradeoff can be a slower and more relaxed way to explore.

Offseason trips can also encourage you to spend more time exploring surrounding communities, scenic drives, historical sites, and places that might be overlooked during a packed peak-season itinerary.

Overlanding Is About More Than Dirt Roads

Not every Anderson Overland trip has to involve technical four-wheel drive trails.

Overlanding and adventure travel are ultimately about the journey, the places you discover, and the experiences that happen along the way.

National parks, ghost towns, scenic highways, dirt roads, small towns, historic sites, and campsites can all become part of the same adventure.
