Double A Rally Team: Inside the Rebelle

Angela & Adriana Talk Rally Navigation, Competition & Adventure

Listen to Episode #100

What does it take to compete in one of the most unique off-road navigation rallies in North America?

In Episode #100 of the Anderson Overland Podcast, we're joined by Angela and Adriana of Double A Rally Team for a conversation about the Rebelle Rally, off-road competition, navigation, teamwork, preparation, and adventure.

The Rebelle isn't simply about driving fast. It challenges competitors to combine navigation, vehicle capability, strategy, communication, endurance, and teamwork across demanding terrain.

What Is the Rebelle Rally?

The Rebelle Rally is an off-road navigation competition that puts teams and vehicles through a challenging multi-day adventure.

Instead of relying solely on modern turn-by-turn navigation, the competition emphasizes navigation skills, route strategy, decision-making, and teamwork.

That combination makes the Rebelle especially interesting to the overlanding and off-road communities because many of the same skills apply to remote vehicle travel.

Inside Double A Rally Team

Angela and Adriana bring us inside the experience of preparing for and competing as Double A Rally Team.

Rally competition requires much more than simply having a capable vehicle. The team has to work together, communicate clearly, make decisions under pressure, and adapt when things don't go according to plan.

Those challenges are part of what makes rally competition such an incredible test of both the vehicle and the people inside it.

Off-Road Navigation Without Relying on GPS

Navigation is one of the defining elements of rally-style competition.

Understanding direction, distance, terrain, maps, and route choices requires a different skill set than simply following instructions from a navigation app.

For overlanders, developing stronger navigation skills can also provide an important backup when traveling through remote areas where cellular service or digital navigation may not always be available.

Teamwork Under Pressure

Driver and navigator have different responsibilities, but both depend heavily on each other.

Communication becomes especially important when the terrain gets difficult, fatigue sets in, or a navigation decision doesn't work as expected.

The ability to stay focused, solve problems, and keep moving forward is just as important as the vehicle itself.

Preparing for an Off-Road Rally

Rally preparation involves the vehicle, equipment, navigation skills, physical preparation, logistics, and plenty of practice.

Reliability is especially important. Tires, suspension, brakes, cooling systems, drivetrain components, electrical systems, and routine maintenance all become critical when a vehicle is subjected to long days in demanding terrain.

Competitors also have to prepare themselves for long hours, changing conditions, difficult decisions, and the mental demands of competition.

What Overlanders Can Learn From Rally Competition

You don't have to compete in a rally to learn from rally teams.

Navigation, vehicle preparation, communication, route planning, recovery skills, teamwork, and knowing when to change plans are equally valuable during recreational off-road travel.

Rally competition takes those skills and puts them under pressure, making it an interesting proving ground for techniques that can translate directly into overlanding.

Women in Off-Road Adventure & Rally Competition

The Rebelle Rally has helped create a distinctive space within off-road motorsports where women compete through navigation, strategy, vehicle capability, and teamwork.

Teams like Double A Rally Team also introduce more people to the navigation and competition side of the broader off-road and adventure community.

Rebelle Rally & Off-Road Navigation FAQ

What is the Rebelle Rally?

The Rebelle Rally is an off-road navigation competition for women that combines vehicle-based travel with traditional navigation, strategy, endurance, and teamwork.

Is the Rebelle Rally a race?

The Rebelle focuses heavily on navigation, precision, strategy, and reaching checkpoints rather than functioning like a traditional high-speed desert race.

What does a navigator do in an off-road rally?

A navigator helps determine location, direction, distance, route choices, and strategy while communicating that information to the driver. Strong communication between driver and navigator is essential.

What skills from rally competition are useful for overlanding?

Navigation, communication, vehicle preparation, route planning, problem solving, recovery knowledge, and decision-making are all useful skills for both rally competition and remote overland travel.

How important is vehicle reliability in an off-road rally?

Reliability is extremely important. A capable vehicle still needs properly maintained tires, brakes, suspension, cooling, drivetrain, electrical systems, and other components to withstand extended travel through demanding terrain.
