E-Biking the Hoover Dam & Historic Railroad Trail
Lake Mead Adventure & Dinner at Gaetano's in Las Vegas
Listen to Episode #113
Adventure doesn't always require four-wheel drive.
In Episode #113 of the Anderson Overland Podcast, we trade four wheels for two and take our e-bikes out to explore the Historic Railroad Trail near Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.
It's a different kind of Anderson Overland adventure, combining e-bikes, desert scenery, history, tunnels, Hoover Dam, and a great meal in Las Vegas to finish the day.
E-Biking to Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Southwest, but exploring the area by bike gives you an entirely different perspective.
Instead of simply driving to the dam, an e-bike adventure allows you to slow down, experience the surrounding desert landscape, and turn the destination into part of a much bigger outdoor adventure.
For us, that's what exploring is all about. The vehicle, bike, trail, or road is simply a way to experience places differently.
Riding the Historic Railroad Trail
The Historic Railroad Trail near Lake Mead provides a unique combination of outdoor recreation and Southwest history.
The route follows portions of the former railroad corridor associated with construction of Hoover Dam and is known for its dramatic desert scenery and historic railroad tunnels.
Riding through the tunnels and overlooking the Lake Mead area makes this much more than a typical bike ride. It's a chance to experience an important piece of regional history while getting outside and exploring.
Exploring Lake Mead by E-Bike
E-bikes have become another way for us to explore beyond where our vehicles can take us.
They work especially well as part of an overland or road-trip setup. Once the vehicle is parked, the bikes give us another way to cover ground, explore trails, and experience a destination.
Whether we're camping, road tripping, or heading out specifically for a ride, bringing e-bikes adds another layer to the adventure.
Overlanding Isn't Just About the Vehicle
It's easy to think of overlanding entirely in terms of trucks, modifications, rooftop tents, and off-road trails.
But for us, the vehicle has always been a tool that gets us closer to the experience.
Sometimes that means driving a remote dirt road. Other times it means parking the Land Cruiser or 4Runner and continuing the adventure on mountain bikes, e-bikes, or on foot.
The important part is getting outside and exploring.
Finishing the Adventure in Las Vegas
Not every adventure has to end around a campfire.
After spending the day riding and exploring the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area, we wrapped up the trip with dinner at Gaetano's in the Las Vegas area.
That's one of the things we enjoy about road trips. A great adventure can combine trails, outdoor recreation, history, food, and a little time in the city all in the same trip.
