Monahan Outdoors: FJ60, FJ80 & Porsche Cayenne Builds

Lessons, Setbacks & Real Overlanding Insights

Listen to Episode #116

Building an overland vehicle rarely goes exactly according to plan. Projects evolve, parts break, ideas change, and sometimes the biggest lessons come from the things that don't work.

In Episode #116 of the Anderson Overland Podcast, we're joined by Monahan Outdoors to talk about Toyota Land Cruiser builds, including the legendary FJ60 and FJ80, along with a very different overland platform: the Porsche Cayenne.

We get into the builds, the setbacks, lessons learned, and the realities of creating vehicles that are actually meant to be used for adventure.

Toyota FJ60 and FJ80 Land Cruiser Builds

Few vehicle families have the history and reputation of the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The FJ60 and FJ80 represent two different generations of Toyota's legendary four-wheel-drive platform, and both have developed loyal followings among off-road enthusiasts, collectors, and overlanders.

While the vehicles are different in design and driving experience, both offer the durability, character, capability, and utility that have helped make classic Land Cruisers such popular adventure platforms.

Building a Toyota FJ60 for Adventure

The 60 Series Land Cruiser has become one of the most recognizable classic Toyota 4x4s.

Its boxy styling, solid axles, cargo space, and old-school simplicity have helped make the FJ60 a favorite among enthusiasts who want a classic vehicle that can still be used for camping, exploring, and off-road travel.

Building an older Land Cruiser also comes with challenges. Age, maintenance history, replacement parts, drivetrain condition, electrical systems, cooling, suspension, and previous modifications can all become part of the ownership experience.

The Toyota FJ80 as an Overland Platform

The FJ80 brought the Land Cruiser platform into a newer generation while retaining the rugged four-wheel-drive capability that made earlier Cruisers famous.

Today, the 80 Series has become one of the most popular classic Toyota platforms for overlanding and off-road builds.

With interior cargo space, solid-axle construction, four-wheel-drive capability, and strong aftermarket and enthusiast support, an FJ80 can become an extremely capable adventure vehicle when properly maintained and thoughtfully modified.

Can You Build a Porsche Cayenne for Overlanding?

Not every overland vehicle has to follow the traditional Toyota, Jeep, or pickup-truck formula.

The Porsche Cayenne represents a completely different approach to building an adventure vehicle and shows how unconventional platforms can open up new possibilities.

Turning a performance-oriented SUV into an overland or off-road build creates a unique set of challenges involving tires, suspension, clearance, protection, cargo, reliability, and aftermarket support.

It also proves one of the most important points about overlanding: adventure isn't limited to one vehicle or one brand.

Vehicle Build Setbacks and Lessons Learned

Social media often shows the finished vehicle. What you don't always see are the problems that happened during the build.

Parts don't always fit. Mechanical problems happen. Modifications create unexpected issues. Budgets change. And sometimes an idea that looked great on paper doesn't work nearly as well in the real world.

Those setbacks are also where some of the most valuable knowledge comes from.

Episode #116 gets into the reality behind building adventure vehicles and why experience often comes from solving problems rather than avoiding them entirely.

Building an Overland Vehicle You Actually Use

A successful overland build isn't necessarily the vehicle with the longest modification list.

The best setup depends on where you travel, how long you're gone, the terrain you encounter, how many people you're carrying, and what you actually want the vehicle to do.

Reliability, tires, recovery equipment, communication, storage, suspension, camping equipment, and vehicle maintenance should all support the adventure instead of becoming the entire reason for it.

Ultimately, the best overland vehicle is one that gets built, maintained, and actually taken outside.

Land Cruiser & Overland Vehicle Build FAQ

Is the Toyota FJ60 good for overlanding?

The FJ60 can be a capable adventure platform thanks to its rugged construction, four-wheel-drive system, cargo space, and classic Land Cruiser design. Because of its age, mechanical condition and maintenance history are especially important before remote travel.

Is the Toyota FJ80 good for overlanding?

The 80 Series Land Cruiser is widely used as an overland and off-road platform. Its four-wheel-drive capability, cargo space, rugged construction, and enthusiast support make it well suited for vehicle-based adventure when properly maintained.

What's the difference between an FJ60 and FJ80 Land Cruiser?

The FJ60 belongs to Toyota's earlier 60 Series generation and offers a more traditional, old-school driving and ownership experience. The FJ80 is part of the later 80 Series and introduced a more modern platform while maintaining serious four-wheel-drive capability.

Can a Porsche Cayenne be used for overlanding?

A Porsche Cayenne can be adapted for adventure and light-to-moderate off-road travel depending on the model, modifications, terrain, and vehicle setup. Tires, ground clearance, protection, recovery planning, cargo capacity, and mechanical condition should all be considered.

What should you prioritize when building an overland vehicle?

A strong mechanical foundation should come first. Reliability, maintenance, appropriate tires, recovery equipment, navigation, communication, and emergency supplies are generally more important than adding modifications simply for appearance.
