Trails, Bikes, Mines & a Ring
Our Ultimate Arizona Road Trip
Listen to Episode #118
Off-road trails, mountain bikes, historic mines, Arizona scenery, and one very important ring — this road trip had a little bit of everything.
In Episode #118 of the Anderson Overland Podcast, we're sharing the story of our ultimate Arizona road trip and the adventures that happened along the way.
From exploring trails and getting outside on the bikes to discovering pieces of Arizona history, this trip represents exactly what we love about overlanding: combining the vehicle, the destination, and the experiences along the way into one unforgettable adventure.
Building the Ultimate Arizona Road Trip
Arizona is one of those places where the landscape can change dramatically over the course of a single road trip.
Desert terrain, red rock country, mountains, pine forests, historic mining areas, small towns, and miles of backroads make Arizona an incredible place for vehicle-based adventure.
Instead of making one destination the entire focus, this trip was about connecting multiple experiences and letting the adventure develop along the way.
Exploring Arizona Off-Road Trails
Getting away from the pavement is one of the best ways to experience Arizona.
The state offers everything from relatively easy dirt roads to technical four-wheel-drive trails, giving overlanders and off-road enthusiasts countless opportunities to explore.
For us, the trail isn't simply a way to reach a destination. Driving the route, stopping to explore, finding unexpected views, and seeing where the road leads are all part of the experience.
Adding Mountain Bikes to the Adventure
One of the things we love about overlanding is that the vehicle can become a base camp for other outdoor activities.
Bringing mountain bikes along creates an entirely different way to experience a destination. Once the vehicle is parked, the bikes let you explore trails and terrain from another perspective.
Combining overlanding and mountain biking makes it possible to build an entire trip around camping, driving, riding, and exploring instead of focusing on only one activity.
Exploring Arizona's Mining History
Arizona's mining history can still be seen throughout the state, especially when traveling through old mining communities and remote backcountry areas.
Historic structures, roads, equipment, and mining sites provide a glimpse into another era and can make exploring Arizona's backroads even more interesting.
Old mine sites can also be extremely dangerous. Abandoned shafts, unstable structures, loose rock, and other hazards mean they should be viewed responsibly and from safe areas while respecting closures, private property, and posted restrictions.
And Then There Was a Ring...
This road trip became unforgettable for a reason that had nothing to do with vehicles, trails, bikes, or destinations.
Somewhere along the adventure, a ring entered the story and turned an already incredible trip into one of the biggest moments of our lives.
It's one of the things we love most about traveling together. Adventures have a way of creating moments and memories that you could never completely plan ahead of time.
Why Arizona Is Made for Overlanding
Arizona offers an incredible combination of public lands, desert landscapes, mountain environments, historic destinations, scenic highways, camping opportunities, and off-road routes.
A single trip can take you from desert terrain into pine forests and mountain communities while providing opportunities for camping, hiking, mountain biking, off-roading, photography, and exploring Arizona history.
That's what makes Arizona such a great place for an overland road trip: there's always another road or destination waiting to be explored.

Arizona Overlanding & Road Trip FAQ
Is Arizona good for overlanding?
Arizona offers a wide variety of landscapes and vehicle-based recreation opportunities, including desert terrain, mountains, forests, backroads, scenic routes, camping areas, and off-road trails. Always research current land-use regulations, closures, weather, fire restrictions, and trail conditions before traveling.
Can you combine mountain biking and overlanding?
Yes. An overland vehicle can serve as transportation and base camp for mountain biking trips, allowing riders to carry bikes, camping equipment, food, water, tools, and other gear to trail destinations.
Can you visit historic mines in Arizona?
Historic mining areas can be found throughout Arizona, but abandoned mines can be extremely dangerous. Never enter abandoned mine shafts or unstable structures, and always respect private property, closures, posted signs, and land-management regulations.
Do you need a modified 4x4 to explore Arizona?
Not always. Arizona has everything from maintained dirt roads to highly technical four-wheel-drive trails. Choose routes appropriate for your vehicle, equipment, driving experience, weather conditions, and comfort level.
What should you bring on an Arizona overland trip?
Your equipment should match the destination and conditions, but water, navigation, communication, first-aid supplies, tire equipment, basic tools, recovery equipment, food, shelter, and emergency supplies are important considerations when traveling through remote areas.
